Creating Your Postpartum Support Plan: The Resources Every New Parent Should Have Before Baby Arrives

When preparing for birth, it's easy to focus on packing your hospital bag, installing the car seat, and finishing the nursery. But one of the most important preparations happens after your baby is born.

The postpartum period is one of the biggest transitions you'll ever experience. Your body is healing, you're learning your baby, your hormones are shifting, and you're adjusting to a completely new routine. As birth and postpartum doulas, we've supported more than 500 families through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. One thing we've learned is that healing was never meant to happen alone.

Helping you build your support team is a part of the care we do! We connect families with trusted professionals in our community so they have an entire village ready to support them. Here are some of the providers we recommend most often.

Start With a Postpartum Doula

A postpartum doula is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself after birth. While everyone focuses on caring for the baby, postpartum doulas focus on caring for you. Our role is to help make the transition into parenthood feel less overwhelming and more supported.

Postpartum doulas provide hands-on support by helping with:

  • Newborn care education

  • Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding support

  • Helping parents build confidence caring for baby

  • Meal preparation and nourishing postpartum meals

  • Light household tasks

  • Emotional support and reassurance

  • Caring for baby while parents shower or rest

  • Helping older siblings adjust

  • Connecting families with trusted local resources

Sometimes parents simply need someone to remind them that they're doing an incredible job. Sometimes they need someone to hold the baby while they eat a warm meal. Sometimes they need someone to answer questions they've been wondering about all day.

No matter what your postpartum journey looks like, having someone in your corner can make all the difference.

Build Your Mental Health Support Team Before Baby Arrives

We often spend months choosing our birth provider but never think about choosing someone to support our mental health afterward. The truth is that postpartum mental health deserves just as much planning as birth itself.

Having a therapist or support group already identified means you're not scrambling to find help if you're feeling overwhelmed during those first few weeks. Two of our favorite local resources are:

The Mommy Center

The The Mommy Center has created an incredible community for new parents. Their mission is to support families not only through pregnancy but throughout early parenthood by combining education, expert-led classes, and genuine community. Their programs cover everything from postpartum recovery and self-care to infant development, mindfulness, feeding, pelvic floor health, and relationships after baby. One of the greatest benefits is connecting with other parents who are in the exact same season of life.

We absolutely love partnering with The Mommy Center because they understand something we deeply believe: Motherhood is easier when you don't do it alone.

Kate Pavlak, LMFT, PMH-C

Kate Pavlak specializes in perinatal mental health and supports families navigating pregnancy, postpartum, anxiety, depression, parenting stress, life transitions, and the emotional adjustments that come with becoming a parent. She offers individual therapy, postpartum psychotherapy groups, and telehealth appointments, making support accessible during this busy season of life.

Our advice? Even if you never need these resources, having them saved in your phone before birth can bring incredible peace of mind.

Set Up Breastfeeding Support Before Baby Arrives

Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both parent and baby. While it may come naturally for some families, many experience questions or challenges during those first few days. Knowing who to call before baby arrives means you won't be searching Google at 2 a.m.

One of our favorite lactation consultants is Ashley Shapiro, RN, IBCLC.

Ashley combines her experience as a registered nurse, postpartum nurse, and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to support families with breastfeeding, combination feeding, bottle feeding, pumping, and newborn feeding plans. She offers prenatal consultations to help families prepare before birth, as well as in-home and office postpartum visits throughout Orange County.

Whether your goal is exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or formula feeding, Ashley meets families where they are without judgment.

Don't Forget About Your Own Physical Recovery

So much attention is placed on recovering after birth, yet many parents are told that discomfort, leaking urine, pelvic pain, or painful intercourse are simply "part of motherhood." They are common, but they are not something you have to live with.

That's why we frequently recommend PelvicSanity.

The team at PelvicSanity specializes in postpartum pelvic floor physical therapy and helps parents recover from issues like pelvic pain, low back pain, prolapse, incontinence, diastasis recti, painful intercourse, and returning safely to exercise. They emphasize that postpartum symptoms are common but treatable, and they create individualized treatment plans that go far beyond simply recommending Kegel exercises.

We love that their philosophy focuses on helping parents feel like themselves again because when you're feeling better physically, it's much easier to care for your growing family.

Your Village Doesn't End When Baby Arrives

One of the biggest myths about parenthood is that you're supposed to figure everything out on your own. You aren't. Having a postpartum support plan means knowing exactly who to call when questions come up.

Your village might include:

  • A postpartum doula

  • A lactation consultant

  • A pelvic floor physical therapist

  • A mental health therapist

  • A local mom support group

  • Family and friends who truly support your healing

The more support you build before baby arrives, the more confident you'll feel once they're here.

Let Us Help You Build Your Village

At The Breezy Doula, we believe postpartum care is just as important as birth preparation.

Whether we're helping you prepare nourishing meals, answering newborn questions, supporting feeding, processing your birth experience, or connecting you with trusted professionals throughout Orange County and San Diego, our goal is always the same: To help you feel cared for while you learn to care for your baby.

You don't have to know everything before your baby arrives. You just need to know you have people who will walk alongside you.

And we'd be honored to be part of that village.
